On the left side, there are s-video, VGA, gigabit Ethernet, two more USB 2.0, and a serial port. On the right side, there are mini-firewire, headphone, mic, and two USB 2.0 ports. Unfortunately, the buttons proved to be a bit erratic at times, requiring varying amounts of force to register a click depending on your hand position. There are two pairs of left/right mouse buttons, depending on which mouse you use. one of the Bargainmeisters here even preferred it to the ThinkPad's trackpoint. An improvement would be to use a more textured surface or one that had greater non-stick properties.

The touchpad performs well with its dedicated vertical and horizontal scrolling, but it could be smoother. The lower travel distance allows for near silent typing. The full-sized keyboard has a firm, solid feel with good tactile response. Our only real complaints were the slight flex around the palm rest area and the flimsiness of the latch.

The rest of the chassis is primarily polycarbonate (plastic). The LCD back is a smooth black matte aluminum with a classy understated chrome Dell logo off to the side. You won't find glossy paint jobs, bezel-less screens, or touch-sensitive buttons on this machine. The Latitude E5500 certainly does look the part of a business laptop.

True road warriors who are looking for a more portable solution with similar performance numbers will want to consider the 4.3lb Latitude E6400 14.1 Laptop. It is not ideal for quick use on the road because of its overall size and 1.5 thickness. The Latitude E5500 weighs 6.4lbs, which is a bit heavier than the average 15 notebook. to the conference room), and still offers strong performance, ergonomics, and screen size. Instead, it is more for the business user who needs a machine that can be moved easily enough when needed (i.e. The E5500 is NOT a road warrior's laptop.

However, after spending time on the machine (and writing this review on it), we were genuinely impressed by its performance and usability. Having been used to the Lenovo ThinkPad X60, we were put off by the size and heft of the E5500. Initially, our impressions for this laptop were rather lackluster.
